The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Louisiana has changed.

In a notice to the public, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office in Louisiana before visiting.

The agency also reminded the public that a visit may not be necessary, noting that many services can be handled online.

"Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?" the agency said.

The Social Security Administration pointed to a range of popular online services, including reviewing your latest statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits and checking the status of an application or appeal.

People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision.

Other online options include managing an account by changing an address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing proof of benefits and printing a 1099.

The agency said users can also find help and answers online, including reviewing frequently asked questions and requesting replacement Medicare or Social Security cards.

The Social Security Administration encouraged the public to go digital and create a personal my Social Security account.
