An international team of astronomers has utilized the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope to observe the Jupiter-sized exoplanet WD 1856 b as it transited its host star. This groundbreaking observation allowed researchers to measure the planet’s mass and temperature, and successfully detect its atmosphere.
The team discovered that WD 1856 b is significantly warmer than anticipated. Furthermore, they determined the most probable mechanism by which the exoplanet achieved its remarkably tight orbit around the white dwarf star.
This research provides the first glimpse into the potential future of gas giant planets, similar to Jupiter, after their host stars, like our Sun, reach the end of their lives billions of years from now, offering crucial insights into planetary survival and evolution in extreme stellar environments.
