Governor Ned Lamont and Connecticut Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto today announced $16.8 million in state grants to 11 towns and cities for the reconstruction of 13 bridges on locally owned roads. This funding, provided through the State Local Bridge Program, aims to enhance infrastructure safety and reliability across Connecticut.
The State Local Bridge Program, administered by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), offers a 50% cost-matching grant to municipalities. Towns and cities are responsible for the design and construction of their projects, with CTDOT providing oversight and guidance. Governor Lamont emphasized the importance of safe, durable bridges for daily travel, stating, “This grant program provides significant relief to our towns and cities, helping them tackle costly infrastructure projects they couldn’t take on alone.”
Among the 13 projects receiving grants are bridge replacements in Burlington, Fairfield, Harwinton, New Canaan, Southbury, Stonington, Suffield, West Hartford, and Winchester. Additionally, rehabilitation projects are slated for bridges in New Milford and Stamford. Commissioner Eucalitto highlighted the collaborative effort, saying, “By partnering with our cities and towns, we are helping move these projects from planning to construction while making travel safer and more reliable for everyone.”
Established in 1984 under the state’s Infrastructure Renewal Program, the State Local Bridge Program addresses the upkeep of Connecticut's approximately 4,200 local bridges and culverts. Since 2016, the program has awarded around $180 million in grants, offering crucial financial support for municipal infrastructure maintenance.
