The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has joined other community groups in demanding the resignation of New Berlin, Wisconsin, Mayor Dave Ament following reports of him sharing anti-Muslim, racist, and sexist content on his personal Facebook page.
Ament's social media activity reportedly included calls to ban Islam and close mosques, alongside derogatory and dehumanizing portrayals of Muslims and Muslim voters. Specific reposts cited were, "If you voted for a Muslim for elected office in this country, you are a traitor," and "If it weren't for white people slavery would've never ended."
CAIR, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, emphasized that an elected official must serve all community members. "Sharing material that demonizes Muslims and promotes hostility toward an entire faith community is incompatible with that responsibility," CAIR said in a statement, adding that Mayor Ament "should resign and allow New Berlin to move forward with leadership that respects all of its residents."
The organization also urged Mayor Ament to take responsibility for the shared material and issue an apology to New Berlin's Muslim residents and other affected communities. This incident comes as CAIR's latest civil rights report documented a record 8,683 anti-Muslim bias complaints in 2025, the highest number recorded since 1996.
