Newsweek is reporting that Senate nominees in both parties now say they want the war with Iran to end, a rare point of agreement that masks sharp divisions over what peace should look like.
It said Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan's Democratic Senate nominee, blames "a stupid war we shouldn't be fighting" in a campaign video filmed outside a gas station, pointing to fuel prices. His Republican opponent, former Representative Mike Rogers, whom President Donald Trump has endorsed, says the war must "end quickly," two months after opposing moves to revoke the president's war powers. In Iowa, Trump-backed Senate nominee Ashley Hinson also wants a "successful and immediate end."
Newsweek said Democrats would help shape the peace should they win the House in November, and perhaps the Senate as well. It said a lasting Iran settlement must answer two questions.
Separately, Newsweek reported that Anthony Scaramucci's reconsideration of the 1999 Seattle protests arrives as Starbucks closes 250 stores across North America.
Newsweek also said it interviewed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said the world's power is shifting and Turkey will not be forced to choose between East and West.
It said Chinese leader Xi Jinping brought his inner circle to Washington, and that the line-up offered clues about a possible successor.
Newsweek Editor-in-Chief Jennifer H. Cunningham said the outlet follows facts, not factions, and that its membership program offers ad-free browsing, exclusive reporting and analysis.
