President Donald J. Trump, alongside U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent and other prominent leaders, celebrated the full launch of "Trump Accounts" with a joint bell-ringing ceremony in the Oval Office, marking a historic step towards enhancing financial opportunities for American children.
The initiative, introduced as the nation begins its 250th year, aims to provide every American child with a head start on the American Dream. Eligible children born between 2025 and 2028 will receive an initial $1,000 contribution from the Treasury Department into tax-advantaged savings and investment accounts. Families can further contribute up to $5,000 annually, with an official app available to track investment growth and promote financial literacy.
President Trump said, "Today is a historic day. As we begin America’s 250th year, we’re launching what’s called Trump Accounts… to ensure that every American child is born with a head start and a fair shot at the American Dream." Secretary Bessent added, "The American Dream belongs to every child. Today, we are equipping the next generation to claim their rightful share."
Industry leaders also voiced strong support. Vlad Tenev, Robinhood Chairman and CEO, highlighted the program's potential to extend stock ownership to nearly all Americans, stating, "This allows us to extend ownership to every newborn, eventually everyone under the age of 18." Jenny Johnson, CEO of Franklin Templeton, emphasized the "power of compounding" from birth, calling it "incredibly powerful." Joe Gebbia, US Chief Design Officer and Co-Founder of Airbnb, noted the $1,000 gift from the Treasury is designed to "kick start an incredible experience for a child to grow up connected to the economy."
Beyond individual contributions, the program encourages employer participation, clarifying that ERISA rules generally do not apply to these contributions, making them an attractive employee benefit. Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler said this offers job creators "a new, low-cost, tax-preferred way to attract and retain talent." Larry Fink, BlackRock Chairman & CEO, underscored the importance of increasing market participation, saying, "Giving every newborn American an investment account... creates a mindset: from birth, every child has a stake in the country’s future."
Families are encouraged to visit TrumpAccounts.gov or Investor.gov/TrumpAccounts and download the official app to begin their child's financial journey, fostering long-term wealth and financial security for future generations.
