The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local Social Security offices, card centers and hearing offices in Georgia has changed.
In a notice to recipients, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office before visiting. It also said many visitors may not need to go to an office at all, because a large amount of business can be handled online.
The agency highlighted a range of services available through its website, including reviewing a latest Social Security statement, checking an earnings history, estimating retirement benefits and checking the status of an application or appeal.
People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision, according to the notice.
Other online options include changing an address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing proof of benefits and printing a 1099. The agency also pointed users to its frequently asked questions, and to online requests for a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card.
The notice encouraged the public to "Go Digital!" and create a personal my Social Security account, which the agency said millions of people already use to access their benefits information.
