Fairfax County is set to host a diverse array of community events this weekend, from Friday, August 21, to Sunday, August 23, 2026, including a "Clear the Shelters" pet adoption drive, the annual Begonia Show and Sale, and various performances as part of the Summer Entertainment Series. Residents can also enjoy educational workshops, outdoor activities, and family-friendly gatherings across multiple locations.
The "Clear the Shelters" event offers waived adoption fees for all pets at the Michael R. Frey and Lorton campuses of Fairfax County Animal Services. Adopters of cats or dogs aged six years or older will also receive a $250 care credit for Pender Veterinary Centre, encouraging the adoption of senior animals. This initiative aims to find loving homes for numerous animals throughout the weekend.
For horticulture enthusiasts, the Annual Begonia Show and Sale will take place Saturday and Sunday at Green Spring Gardens Park in Alexandria. This free event, sponsored by the Potomac Branch of the American Begonia Society, will feature colorful displays, terrariums, and greenhouses. Concurrently, the Summer Entertainment Series continues Friday and Saturday with performances by groups such as Ocho de Bastos, Orquesta Tropikiimba, Stacy Brooks Band, and HuDost.
Additional weekend highlights include a "Dinosaurs in Virginia" talk at Dolley Madison Library, a model train display at Oakton Library, and a QPR Suicide Prevention Training session. Saturday features the Springfield Bridge Walk, nature kayaking at Lake Fairfax Park, and several library events like a "Back to School Bash" and a "Starlight Cinema" showing of 'Cars' at Sully Historic Site. Sunday offers a School Supply Swap at Chantilly Regional Library and various library book sales.
Looking ahead, Fairfax County will host a Clemyjontri Park Open House on August 30 and the "Dog Daze" swimming event for canines at The Water Mine on September 12, providing further opportunities for community engagement.
