Los Angeles has entered its fifth day of protests following immigration raids on June 6, and journalists covering the events have faced significant risks. Several reporters have been injured while reporting on the ground. Ryanne Mena, a crime reporter with the LA Daily News, and freelance reporter Sean Beckner-Carmitchel were shot with pepper balls and tear gas on Friday and Saturday. Nick Stern, a British freelance photojournalist, underwent emergency surgery after being struck in the leg by a plastic bullet on Sunday. Stern reported to the BBC that he was wearing a press card and carrying his camera at the time. Lauren Tomasi, a reporter for Australia’s 9News, was deliberately shot in the leg with a rubber bullet while reporting live on Sunday. As of June 10, over 25 other journalists have been reportedly assaulted or obstructed. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has expressed deep concern over these attacks. Katherine Jacobsen, U.S., Canada, and Caribbean Program Coordinator stated that, "Any attempt to intimidate, injure, or silence journalists through violence or harassment is unacceptable and must not be tolerated."
