Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered the United States and Arkansas state flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on May 30, 2026, in remembrance of Fireman Third Class Royle Bradford Luker. Luker, a North Little Rock native, made the ultimate sacrifice during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and his remains were recently identified after more than 80 years.
Fireman Third Class Luker served honorably in the United States Navy aboard the USS West Virginia. For his valor and service, he received numerous commendations, including the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. His unwavering courage and dedication to duty are cherished by his surviving family, including nephew John Luker and niece Becky Liensing.
Advancements in forensic science provided the breakthrough that allowed Luker's remains to be identified, bringing clarity and closure. He will be laid to rest with full military honors on May 30, 2026, at New Bethel Cemetery near Plainview, Arkansas, beside his parents. Governor Sanders proclaimed May 30, 2026, as a day of remembrance, inviting all Arkansans to honor his legacy and reflect upon the cost of freedom.
