The U.S. Census Bureau is mourning the passing of former Director Vincent Barabba, who had just celebrated his 92nd birthday earlier this month, while also marking the 15th anniversary of Manufacturing Day and preparing a series of data releases.
"I am saddened to share the news of the passing of former Director Vincent Barabba, who had just celebrated his 92nd birthday earlier this month," said George M. Cook, Performing the Duties of Director.
Barabba was born in 1934 in Chicago, Illinois. After earning his undergraduate degree from Woodbury Business College in 1954, he enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1954 until 1958. He later attended California State University, Northridge, and earned his M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1964.
The Census Bureau this week is highlighting the manufacturing sector's vital role and significant contribution to the nation's economy. Observed annually on the first Friday in October, Manufacturing Day celebrates the benefits and potential of modern manufacturing while encouraging greater interest in manufacturing careers. The bureau also has a Manufacturing Week homepage featuring manufacturing statistics, data products and resources.
On Sept. 29, the bureau will release the 2024 Nonemployer Statistics (NES), providing annual subnational economic data for businesses with no paid employees that are subject to federal income tax and have receipts of $1,000 or more ($1 or more for the Construction sector). The data cover the number of nonemployer establishments and receipts by legal form of organization and receipt size class, with statistics available for 18 industry sectors at the national, state, metropolitan/micropolitan statistical area, combined statistical area and county levels.
In case you missed it, the bureau released the 2026 Annual Government Organization counts on Sept. 24, including tables on Government Units by State, Local Governments by Type and State, and Special District Governments by Function and State, along with the annual Government Organization Public Use File. The Business Trends and Outlook Survey was also released Sept. 24, measuring business conditions on an ongoing basis with biweekly data by sector, state, employment size and the 25 most populous metropolitan statistical areas.
Upcoming releases include the Advance Economic Indicators Report for August 2026 on Sept. 30 at 8:30 a.m., Construction Spending for August 2026 on Oct. 1 at 10 a.m., and the full Manufacturers' Shipments, Inventories and Orders report for August 2026 on Oct. 2 at 10 a.m.
