Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's office released its "Week in Review" for the period ending June 19, 2026, highlighting the signing of a $3.7 billion capital budget, a significant statement on the death penalty, and ongoing efforts to reduce violent crime across the state.
On Monday, Governor DeWine signed Senate Bill 450, the capital budget for fiscal years 2027 and 2028, allocating $3.7 billion for projects aimed at strengthening communities, supporting the workforce, and growing the economy. Governor DeWine said, "The investments we are announcing today build upon the work we have done to strengthen communities, support our workforce, and grow the economy over the last seven years." Lt. Governor Jim Tressel added that the budget "reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for Ohio families in every aspect from schools to workforce development, to local infrastructure and community spaces."
A notable announcement came on Tuesday when Governor DeWine issued a statement regarding Ohio's death penalty. He concluded that it is "impossible to make the case that the death penalty is a deterrent" due to the increasing remoteness of executions over decades. Governor DeWine stated, “I no longer believe the death penalty is a deterrent to murder.”
The week also saw continued efforts in public safety and economic development. On Thursday, Governor DeWine, Lt. Governor Tressel, and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Director Pamela Boratyn announced $8.5 million in transportation funding for 24 roadwork projects across 21 counties. These projects are expected to support over 32,500 jobs and more than $2 billion in private sector capital investments. Governor DeWine emphasized that "A modern, reliable transportation system is a major catalyst for economic growth and community vitality." Additionally, a violent crime reduction operation in Cleveland on Wednesday resulted in 11 felony arrests and eight illegal firearm confiscations, part of the state's ongoing initiative that has seen over 240 felony arrests and 130 illegal firearm recoveries since early 2026.
Other activities included the 50th annual Ice Cream Social hosted by Governor and First Lady DeWine, commemorating the nation's 250th birthday. Lt. Governor Tressel joined the "Columbus All Pro Dad Experience," a partnership aimed at strengthening families. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources announced free fishing days for June 20 and 21, and Governor DeWine signed four bills into law, including the "Keep Them Safe Act" and the "Joshua Alert" for missing autistic or developmentally disabled children. The week concluded with the celebration of Juneteenth and the DeWines joining Dayton Children's Hospital in supporting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
