The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local Social Security offices, card centers and hearing offices in California has changed.
In a notice to recipients, the agency directed the public to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting.
The agency also said many people may not need to visit an office at all, noting that a lot of business can be handled online.
Online services highlighted by the agency include reviewing your latest Social Security statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.
People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision, according to the notice.
Account management tools allow users to change their address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099, the agency said.
Help and answers are available online as well, including a frequently asked questions section and options to request a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card.
The agency encouraged the public to "Go Digital!" and create a personal my Social Security account, saying millions of people already use one to access their benefits.
