Alabama's Attorney General's Office has filed emergency stay applications with the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking a ruling by Monday, June 1, after a three-judge panel temporarily blocked the state's 2023 congressional map. In response, Governor Kay Ivey today amended the Special Primary Election Calendar, extending a crucial deadline for certifying candidates.
Governor Ivey expressed strong support for the appeal, stating, "Alabama is committed to the redistricting fight, and as I said yesterday, I fully support Attorney General Marshall's appeal." She added, "I am hopeful the Supreme Court quickly gives Alabama a favorable response so we can move forward with the August 11 Special Primary Election using our 2023 congressional map."
The amendment to the election calendar shifts the deadline for the secretary of state to certify names of opposed candidates from Friday, May 29, 2026, to Wednesday, June 3, 2026. This adjustment aims to provide additional time should the state receive a favorable ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court, ensuring the August 11 Special Primary Election can proceed with the state's preferred map.
