Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass today affirmed the constitutional promise of birthright citizenship following a Supreme Court ruling, stating the decision upholds a long-standing recognition of American citizens. The Mayor emphasized the ruling as a rejection of efforts to divide the country and instill fear within immigrant communities.
"This decision is a blow against the Administration’s ongoing campaign to divide our country and instill fear in our immigrant communities," Mayor Bass said. "For more than 150 years, children born in the United States have been recognized as American citizens. Today, that promise endures.
Mayor Bass reiterated Los Angeles's commitment as a city of hope and sanctuary for all. She assured worried parents and young people that they belong in Los Angeles, stating, "Your dreams are part of our future, and your family is part of our story." She pledged to ensure the city remains a place of safety and opportunity.
