The U.S. Department of War has established a new direct-reporting Portfolio Manager for Unmanned Systems (DRPM-UxS) to consolidate and accelerate the development and deployment of autonomous capabilities, aiming to secure American drone dominance.
This strategic reorganization, announced today, July 1, 2026, is a direct response to presidential directives and aims to counter adversaries' rapid production of millions of unmanned systems annually. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said that drones and autonomous systems are "the most consequential battlefield innovation of this generation," requiring the U.S. to move quickly to maintain its tactical and strategic edge.
Last year, President Donald J. Trump signed Executive Orders, including "Unleashing American Drone Dominance" and "Restoring American Airspace Sovereignty," which mandated reforms in acquisition processes and the procurement of low-cost, high-performing U.S.-manufactured drones. Following these, Secretary Hegseth issued a memorandum on July 10, 2025, committing the Department to strengthening the domestic drone manufacturing base and training the joint force to fight and win with these capabilities.
The DRPM-UxS will provide direct oversight for all unmanned activities and associated programmatic funding lines across the Department of War, including Service Components, Joint Interagency Task Force 401, the Defense Innovation Unit, and the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group. This consolidation aims to establish an immediate operational baseline and centralize specialized expertise.
