Comptroller of the Currency Jonathan V. Gould said a regulatory and supervisory framework that supports the military community is essential, in remarks delivered today at the Military Banking Summit.
Gould said large banks and small military banks operate on very different scales, but both play an important role in supporting the financial strength of the nation. "And both deserve a supervisory framework that allows them to serve their customers, manage their risks, and grow responsibly," he said.
Addressing military banks, Gould said they are "the lifeblood of the Main Street economy," providing small businesses and hardworking families with the financial services they need. "And we are committed to making it easier for you to do exactly that," he said.
On community banks, Gould said servicemembers, their families and veterans deserve access to institutions that understand their circumstances. He cited supporting a servicemember through a permanent change of station, helping a military family buy a home, and providing veterans with financial services as they transition to civilian life.
"A Community Bank Comeback must include the institutions that have made that commitment to our military community," Gould said.
The OCC charters, regulates and supervises national banks and federal savings associations, ensuring they operate in a safe and sound manner, provide fair access to financial services, treat customers fairly and comply with applicable laws and regulations.
