Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy announced significant federal investments and new state initiatives this week, including over $410 million from the Trump Administration for the Alaska Marine Highway System, specifically targeting rural Southeast Alaska. This substantial funding aims to bolster critical transportation infrastructure.
The Governor also announced that Alaska is now accepting applications for K–12 Scholarship Granting Organizations. These organizations will operate under the new federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, established by President Donald J. Trump's Working Families Tax Cuts Act. Starting January 1, 2027, taxpayers can receive a dollar-for-dollar federal income-tax credit of up to $1,700 annually for contributions to approved SGOs.
In response to the Mukluk Fire, Governor Dunleavy issued a Disaster Declaration for the Alaska Gateway Regional Education Attendance Area, including Tok, activating state Public and Individual Assistance programs. Additionally, emergency repairs are advancing at the Skagway Ferry Terminal, involving the replacement of anchor chains, stabilization of the terminal float, and repair of the concrete abutment. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is overseeing these repairs, which will include removing the vehicle transfer bridge and passenger walkway for access.
The Governor also proclaimed a Fentanyl Prevention & Awareness Day, highlighting the dangers of the highly potent synthetic opioid.
