The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers, or hearing offices in Virginia has changed.
In a notice to recipients, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office, card center, or hearing office before visiting.
The agency also said a visit may not be necessary, noting that many services can be handled online.
"Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?" the notice said.
The Social Security Administration listed a range of popular online services, including reviewing your latest statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application.
People can also apply online for retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision, according to the notice.
Account management options include changing an address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing proof of benefits, and printing a 1099.
The agency said users can also review its FAQs and request replacement Medicare or Social Security cards online.
The notice encouraged the public to "Go Digital" and create a personal my Social Security account, joining "the millions" who use it to discover their benefits.
