L.A. Times Politics is reporting that Rep. Robert Garcia, a two-term Democratic congressman from Long Beach, is poised to become chairman of the House Oversight Committee if his party gains control of the House in November. Garcia, currently the ranking Democrat on the panel, intends to lead investigations into President Donald J Trump's administration for alleged corruption.
The newspaper said Garcia highlighted what he described as "unprecedented" corruption within the Trump administration. It cited Trump's reported earnings of at least $2.2 billion in his first year back in the Oval Office, significantly exceeding his presidential salary. Garcia also mentioned Jared Kushner's financial dealings with foreign governments, Trump's sons' real estate ventures and board memberships tied to federal contracts, and allegations of pardons being sold.
Garcia also expressed interest in scrutinizing other administration officials, including JD Vance, Susie Wiles, and Kash Patel regarding secret meetings about the Epstein files, and Stephen Miller's activities.
The L.A. Times Politics noted that Garcia is seeking re-election in November for a reconfigured congressional district that now includes more conservative areas like Huntington Beach and Newport Beach, following a 2025 measure. Despite the changes, the district still leans left, and Garcia's re-election odds are considered strong, especially in a midterm election seen as a referendum on the incumbent president. Garcia stated that corruption and affordability are the two issues he consistently hears about from constituents.
