New Jersey Governor Sherrill today issued a statement regarding the Supreme Court's decision on birthright citizenship, which rejected former President Donald Trump's attempt to alter the constitutional guarantee. Governor Sherrill called Trump's effort "plainly unlawful and reckless," noting that even his "own hand-picked Supreme Court said no."
"Birthright citizenship is a foundational constitutional guarantee that has shaped our nation for more than 150 years," Governor Sherrill said. She emphasized that the United States is "a nation of laws, and no president should have the power to change that with a stroke of a pen."
Governor Sherrill expressed gratitude to Attorney General Davenport, her team, and multistate partners for their leadership in opposing the order. She affirmed New Jersey's commitment to the Constitution and its ongoing fight to uphold the rule of law.
