Newsweek is reporting that officials are revisiting allegations that a former Cornell University student was sexually assaulted by members of a fraternity in 2024. It said the criminal question surrounding the alleged assault had appeared settled for nearly two years before the allegations became national news.
Newsweek said reopening the case does not prove a crime occurred, noting that no criminal charges have been announced. It said the development raises the question of why it took so long, and so much media attention, for authorities to take another look.
Separately, Newsweek is reporting that President Donald Trump said Sunday he is "very seriously" considering a ban on American diesel exports. It said on-highway prices hit a record $6.529 a gallon last week.
Newsweek also reported on a suspected bomb plot and whether an Iranian hand was behind it, saying the president will have a sharper case against reluctant NATO allies if so.
In other items, Newsweek published a first-person account from a 32-year-old who was told he had months to live after what he thought was a sinus infection. It also ran commentary criticizing adults who are devoted to Disney theme parks, and an analysis arguing that Los Angeles is on the cusp of its own political moment, pointing to Nithya Raman's rise.
Newsweek also published a piece examining what a harrowing 1984 BBC nuclear disaster film says about artificial intelligence's "Terminator" scenario. In a note to readers, Editor-in-Chief Jennifer H. Cunningham said there is no shortage of news but that trustworthy news is harder to find, and said the outlet follows facts, not factions.
