Library of Congress Acquires New Welsh Symphony for Collections

The U.S. Library of Congress has added "Symffoni'r Môr Mawr, A Transatlantic Symphony," a new musical gift from Wales, to its collections, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Composed by multi-award-winning Katie Jenkins, this 15-minute orchestral work with voices saw an excerpt premiered on September 1 in the Library's historic Coolidge Auditorium. The score will now join the Library's extensive music collections.

Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen said, "‘Symffoni'r Môr Mawr’ is a wonderful addition to our vast music collections. It was an honor to welcome the premiere of this piece on our Coolidge Auditorium stage." He added, "This gift from Wales reflects the cultural bond between our two nations, and we are proud that this musical work will now be preserved here for the American people and researchers for generations to come."

Rooted in Welsh traditions, the piece draws on Welsh song and American musical energy, celebrating shared values of creativity, community, and the drive to build a better future.
