The Social Security Administration said the operational status of its local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Maine has changed.

In a notice to customers, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting. The agency did not specify the reason for the change or which locations are affected.

The Social Security Administration also reminded customers that they may not need to visit an office at all, noting that much of its business can be handled online.

The agency highlighted a range of services available through a personal my Social Security account, including reviewing a latest statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.

Customers can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision. Account holders can change their address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099.

Other online options include reviewing frequently asked questions, requesting a replacement Medicare card and requesting a replacement Social Security card.

The agency encouraged customers to "Go Digital" and create a personal my Social Security account to access their benefits.
