USA TODAY is reporting that the military is delaying the cleanup of toxic PFAS, or "forever chemicals," at hundreds of bases across the U.S., with some delays extending for more than a decade. It said cleanup timelines at over 500 military sites have quietly shifted back since the Pentagon's initial announcements in 2021.
The outlet also reported that Germany's government pledged to bring to justice those responsible for a deadly July 25 attack near a Pride event in Berlin, which killed one person and injured 16 others.
Separately, USA TODAY said the Trump administration is ramping up a controversial plan to revoke citizenship, targeting individuals it claims are criminals and fraudsters who should not have become citizens.
In environmental news, it reported that a Pacific El Niño is setting daily warm water records, stunning scientists who describe the world as being in uncharted waters and are uncertain about future impacts. Cities including Phoenix, Tucson, San Diego and Albuquerque are conserving water as the Colorado River reservoir, Lake Powell, faces a potential "dead pool" crisis.
