An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has validated a survey exploring public and professional attitudes towards dental providers administering vaccines, including those for HPV and COVID-19. This research comes as some states have already begun authorizing dentists to provide vaccinations, traditionally handled by primary care settings or pharmacies.
The study aims to understand the potential for expanding the role of dental professionals in public health. Social work researcher Tamara J. Cadet emphasized the broader implications of such a shift.
"Expanding the scope of dentistry to include vaccine education and administration could increase access to care, vaccine uptake, and disease prevention," Cadet said. The findings suggest a potential new avenue for improving vaccination rates and public health outcomes by leveraging dental practices.
