California Governor Gavin Newsom today unveiled Cal-Secure 2.0, an updated cybersecurity strategy designed to protect state government systems from increasingly sophisticated online threats, including those powered by artificial intelligence. This new roadmap builds upon the state's initial 2021 strategy, providing agencies with practical tools and guidance to fortify essential services ranging from healthcare and benefits to transportation and public safety.
Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of this update, saying, "Californians expect their government to protect not only their personal information, but also the essential services they rely on every day. As cyber threats evolve, California is evolving with them. Our strategy helps ensure our state stays ahead of emerging risks while continuing to deliver secure, reliable public services." The updated plan specifically addresses new threats driven by AI and other rapidly evolving technologies.
The strategy focuses on three key priorities: building a stronger cybersecurity workforce through recruitment, training, and retention; improving inter-agency coordination for faster information sharing and response; and modernizing technology with investments in stronger security tools and preparation for emerging AI technologies. California State Chief Information Officer Chris Given said, "Cyber threats don't stand still, and neither can we. Cal-Secure 2.0 gives state agencies practical guidance and tools to strengthen security, adapt to new threats, and better protect the services Californians depend on."
Unlike its predecessor, Cal-Secure 2.0 offers agencies flexibility to prioritize risks relevant to their operations while adhering to a common statewide framework aligned with national cybersecurity standards. California State Information Security Officer Vitaliy Panych added, "Our goal is simple: help every state entity understand its biggest risks, strengthen its defenses, and respond quickly when threats arise." This initiative continues California's leadership in data privacy and responsible AI adoption.
