The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced today it is launching new processes to assist parents in enrolling newborns into Trump Accounts, a new type of individual retirement account designed for eligible minors. This automatic system aims to provide every newborn with the opportunity to benefit from a Trump Account from the start of life.
Trump Accounts were established one year ago on July 4, 2025, when President Donald J. Trump signed the Working Families Tax Cuts into law. These accounts are available for eligible minors under the age of 18.
SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said, "Trump Accounts represent one of the most significant investments in the next generation of Americans in our nation’s history, providing American children with a strong financial footing for the future." He added that "Social Security numbers are the backbone of Trump Accounts, and we will empower parents to enroll their newborns through the Enumeration at Birth program to take full advantage of this program from the day a child is born."
Starting next week, the SSA will update guidance for hospitals and assist states in modifying existing hospital forms used by parents to apply for Social Security numbers through the Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program. These updates will facilitate the automatic creation of a Trump Account. Future Social Security card mailers for newborns will also include information about the accounts.
Trump Accounts can be established for children with a valid Social Security number up to age 18. A one-time $1,000 pilot program contribution from the Department of Treasury is available to eligible U.S. citizen children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. To date, six million children have been enrolled. On July 4, 2026, eligible children with Trump Accounts will begin receiving these initial $1,000 government contributions.
