Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced today the extension of an executive order reducing the gas tax by 10 cents for 33 cities and counties where local officials requested the relief. This extension, effective until Tuesday, June 30, will continue to lower gas and diesel prices in these areas.
However, Kentuckians in communities whose local leaders did not request an extension will experience a 10-cent per gallon increase at the pump starting Thursday, June 11. The original May 5 executive order, which required local government requests for extension beyond 30 days, aimed to alleviate financial strain on families.
"Gas prices are too high due to the continued war in Iran, and Americans – including right here in Kentucky – are struggling. Every dollar counts, and my executive order lowered gas and diesel prices across the state to help our families save," said Gov. Beshear. He added, "Government is there to help our people, and the state can and will make up any potential financial hit. Right now, our priority should be on Kentucky families, and I applaud these local leaders for doing what’s right."
The Governor also previously froze the gas tax at 26.4 cents per gallon, saving Kentuckians an estimated $1.7 million monthly, and urged Congress to suspend the federal gas tax. These measures, alongside the recent approval to remove the Louisville area from the federal Reformulated Gasoline Program, reflect ongoing efforts to mitigate rising fuel costs for Kentucky residents.
