A Lenexa, Kansas, man has been charged in federal court with attempted sex trafficking of a minor following an investigation involving online communications with an undercover law enforcement officer. Curtis Ray Gibson, 47, had his initial appearance in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Missouri, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, after a criminal complaint was filed on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

According to an affidavit, Gibson engaged in online communications over two days with an individual he believed to be a 15-year-old minor. During these exchanges, Gibson allegedly arranged to meet the purported minor for sexual conduct in exchange for $400 and requested pornographic images.

Gibson was arrested on June 9, 2026, after arriving at a hotel where he had planned to meet the minor. The charges against Gibson are accusations, and evidence must be presented to a federal trial jury to determine guilt or innocence. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative to combat child sexual exploitation.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Kansas City Missouri Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Luna is prosecuting the case.
