Governor Kay Ivey is encouraging all Alabamians to participate in the national "Light to Unite" week from July 1 through July 8, 2026, to honor America's 250th anniversary. Citizens are urged to display patriotism by illuminating government buildings, businesses, and homes in red, white, and blue, and by flying the Stars and Stripes.
"This July 4 marks a very special and historic anniversary for our Republic and the cause of liberty," said Governor Ivey. "We celebrate 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of our great country." The "Light to Unite" campaign, launched by the National Flag Foundation, aims to unite Americans in celebrating their shared heritage, with Governor Ivey officially proclaiming the week in Alabama.
Sen. Arthur Orr, chairman of the Alabama Semiquincentennial Commission, joined Governor Ivey for the proclamation signing. "By lighting our homes and communities in red, white and blue, Alabamians can come together in a visible show of unity in celebration of our nation's 250th anniversary," said Sen. Orr. This initiative aligns with the historic week when the Continental Congress debated and adopted the Declaration of Independence.
Additionally, Governor Ivey announced an "America 250 Alabama Celebration" at the State Capitol on May 21, 2026. This free public event will feature the unveiling of a massive 250th edition U.S. flag, a musical performance by Randy Owen of Alabama, and a flyover of four F-35 fighter jets.
