The Social Security Administration said the operational status of Social Security offices, card centers and hearing offices in California has changed.

In a notice to the public, the agency directed Californians to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before planning a visit.

The agency also said many people may not need to visit an office at all, noting that a large amount of business can be handled online.

"Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?" the agency said in the notice.

The Social Security Administration highlighted a range of online services, including reviewing a latest Social Security statement, checking an earnings history and estimating retirement benefits. Users can also check the status of an application or appeal.

Benefits that can be applied for online include retirement benefits, disability benefits and Medicare benefits, according to the agency. Applicants can also appeal a medical decision through its online services.

Account management tools allow users to change their address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099 form.

For help and answers, the agency pointed to its frequently asked questions, and said replacement Medicare cards and replacement Social Security cards can be requested online.

The agency encouraged the public to go digital and create a personal my Social Security account to access benefits information.
