Ethan Rupeka, a 22-year-old Latham, New York resident, has been indicted on charges of receipt and possession of child pornography following an arraignment on May 29. The charges stem from an investigation initiated by a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
According to the indictment, Rupeka allegedly received child pornography via social media messaging services and possessed the material on four different electronic devices. A search warrant executed on his residence by the New York State Police on February 12, 2025, led to the discovery of the evidence. Rupeka was released to probation on June 1st, pending trial.
United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III emphasized the role of NCMEC, stating, "The reprehensible conduct exhibited by this defendant was identified thanks to the dedicated efforts of the NCMEC." Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Albany Field Office, added, "FBI Albany’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force is deeply committed to working with partners to swiftly investigate predators like Mr. Rupeka." New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James also applauded the diligent work, noting, "It is through great partnership that we continue to hold those accountable who seek to put a child in harm’s way."
The charge of Receipt of Child Pornography carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years and a maximum of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a supervised release term of at least 5 years. A conviction would also require Rupeka to register as a sex offender. The FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, with assistance from the New York State Police, is investigating the case as part of Project Safe Childhood. Rupeka is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
