Bolt, a 3-year-old German shorthaired pointer from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), has been named the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) 2026 "Cutest Canine" following a nationwide social media contest. The annual competition celebrates the agency's hardworking explosives detection canines, with the traveling public and TSA employees casting votes.
The contest began with 85 nominations from TSA canine handlers across the nation's airports. Employee online voting narrowed the field to four finalists, from which the public selected Bolt as the winner. This marks the third time in four years that a German shorthaired pointer has claimed the top honor in the TSA Cutest Canine Contest.
TSA Administrator David P. Cummins congratulated Bolt and acknowledged the vital role of all explosives detection canine teams. "This recognition is a fun way to celebrate the extraordinary work of our canine teams and the strong bond between each canine and handler," Cummins said, emphasizing their effectiveness in detecting threats and deterring attacks.
Bolt's handler, Daphne Wang, described her partner as an intense worker with a unique personality. "He is such a character and a hard-working little guy. He absolutely loves his job and coming to work," Wang said, adding that "it’s definitely an adventure working with Bolt every day."
TSA employs these highly trained canine teams nationwide to detect explosive odors in dynamic environments, providing a crucial layer of security. Deputy Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill underscored their importance, saying, "As cute as Bolt and our other canines are, the work they do is vital for TSA's national security mission." These teams train at the agency's Canine Training Center in San Antonio and have been integral to airport security since 2011.
The other finalists included Ember, a Labrador retriever from Orlando International Airport; Epic, a Labrador retriever from Pittsburgh International Airport; and Xaro, a German shepherd from St. Louis Lambert International Airport, who is planning to retire later this year. The public will be able to download the free 2027 TSA Canine Calendar, featuring Bolt and other contestants, later this year.
