Mayor Karen Bass's Inside Safe initiative marked its 140th operation yesterday in Palms, successfully moving nearly 20 unhoused Angelenos from a longstanding encampment into stable housing. This latest effort brings the total number of individuals housed through the program to over 6,000 across Los Angeles.
The operation focused on an encampment at the intersection of Venice and Glendon, returning the sidewalk to local families and businesses. Mayor Bass emphasized the program's ongoing commitment, saying, "Inside Safe has brought thousands of unhoused Angelenos across the city into safe, stable housing, and we’re not slowing down." She thanked Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky for her partnership.
Councilmember Yaroslavsky noted a 22 percent reduction in unsheltered homelessness in Council District 5 since she took office, attributing success to pairing encampment resolutions with housing offers and sustained outreach. "We’ve done it by pairing each resolution with an offer of housing, then staying engaged through continued outreach and follow-up to keep encampments from returning," she said, confirming 19 people moved indoors from the recent operation.
Those housed received onsite medical support and personal care items from Housing MV volunteers, while LAHSA provided additional shelter to help individuals escape extreme heat. Beyond Inside Safe, Mayor Bass is advancing several initiatives, including Executive Directive 1 to streamline affordable housing development, the Citywide Housing Incentive Program, and an update to the Rent Stabilization Ordinance, aiming to prevent homelessness and accelerate housing construction.
