Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Director Pamela Boratyn today announced $72 million in funding for 33 transportation projects aimed at improving roadway safety across 23 counties. These initiatives are financed through ODOT’s Highway Safety Improvement Program, recognized as the nation's largest per capita safety program.
Governor DeWine emphasized the critical need for these upgrades, stating, "Every life lost on our roadways is one too many. These projects target the types of crashes that are most likely to result in death or serious injury. By investing in proven safety countermeasures, we're making our transportation system safer for everyone." The funding will be allocated for State Fiscal Years 2027 through 2032.
The projects include 13 intersection safety initiatives totaling $46.8 million and 20 pedestrian and roadway departure projects amounting to $25.3 million. Improvements will feature roundabouts, turn lanes, intersection upgrades, enhanced signs and pavement markings, and high-visibility crosswalks, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
Director Boratyn added, “Every single investment we make in our transportation network is an investment in the safety of the people who use it.” The Highway Safety Improvement Program specifically addresses locations with a history of fatal or injury crashes where previous safety measures have proven insufficient.
