The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer for Javiel Pena Sola, an illegal alien charged with a fatal hit-and-run in North Carolina that killed three people.
The crash occurred on July 18 in Salisbury, where two occupants died at the scene and a third succumbed to injuries after being airlifted. Sola, identified as an illegal alien from El Salvador, was charged with three counts of felony hit-and-run involving serious injury or death after attempting to flee the scene. ICE lodged the detainer on July 22, requesting North Carolina officials not release him from the Rowan County Jail.
Sola's criminal history includes prior convictions in Maryland in July 2015 for reckless endangerment, failure to stop after an accident, and driving without a license. He was also arrested for escaping custody. After being turned over to ICE in March 2016 following an arrest, he was released by the Obama Administration two months later in May.
Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said, "His criminal history includes prior convictions in 2015 for hit and run, reckless endangerment, and driving without a license. Although ICE had arrested him in 2016, the Obama Administration RELEASED him into American communities. These deaths were 100% preventable."
