New York City has announced several new initiatives, including a major step towards safer streets, expanded access to city careers, and unique opportunities for residents to engage with city history and landmarks.
Executive Order 19 mandates that 4,000 municipal trucks install audible pedestrian alerts by June 2029. Additionally, all new non-emergency municipal vehicles will feature both pedestrian alerts and speed-limiting technology, which has been shown to reduce dangerous speeding by 64%.
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) is making civil service exams free for New York City high school students and first-time test takers, aiming to broaden access to hundreds of city government careers. DCAS also released the FY27 exam schedule and made information available in over 190 languages.
In a unique offering, the city will auction one of 30 authentic Champions Way street signs from the Knicks’ 2026 championship parade, installed along the Canyon of Heroes. Furthermore, DCAS is now accepting reservations for visitors to ascend to the cupola of the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building, offering sweeping views of Lower Manhattan.
