Governor Ned Lamont, alongside the Connecticut Office of Higher Education and Serve Connecticut, has announced widespread volunteer opportunities for the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. This federally recognized day, marking the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks, encourages Americans to engage in charitable volunteering, with a focus this year on combating food insecurity through nationwide meal-packing events.
On Friday, September 11, 2026, an estimated 50,000 volunteers across the United States are expected to pack millions of meals for individuals and families facing food insecurity. Connecticut will host two significant meal-packing events: one in Hartford at PeoplesBank Area and another in Bridgeport at The Redline Room.
Governor Lamont emphasized the day's significance, saying, "September 11 is a day when Americans remember not only the tremendous loss our country experienced, but also the extraordinary sense of unity and service that followed. Twenty-five years later, service has the power to bring people together, and that spirit is at the heart of how our nation responded in the days and months following September 11."
Higher Education Commissioner Timothy D. Larson added that volunteering offers a meaningful way to honor those lost and help others. "These events give Connecticut residents an opportunity to work side by side to help neighbors facing food insecurity," Larson said, encouraging participation from individuals, families, and organizations.
Volunteers aged 18 or older are invited to join support teams at both Connecticut locations, assisting with tasks like event setup, volunteer check-in, and meal boxing. No prior experience is necessary, as training will be provided. Kate Scheuritzel, director of programs with Serve Connecticut, highlighted that the day "transforms the anniversary of 9/11 into a day of doing good and encourages Americans to honor those lost and those who responded by serving their communities." Information on how to register for these events and other volunteer opportunities is available.
