TIME is reporting that its editor in chief, Sam Jacobs, described a recent visit by correspondent Richard Hall to Admiral Samuel Paparo at the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Command in Hawaii. It said Hall interviewed Paparo in late July and found a reprint of a May 18, 1942, TIME cover on the wall of his office, depicting Paparo's predecessor, Admiral Chester Nimitz, who led U.S. naval forces to victory over Japan in the Pacific war.
TIME said Paparo commands 400,000 military and civilian personnel across the Pacific at a time of increased tension with China. It said Paparo told Hall that winning without fighting is the height of skill, and that his measure of mission success is providing a deterrent capability so that war never occurs in the first place. TIME said Paparo is a graduate of the Navy Fighter Weapons School, known as TOPGUN, the son of a Marine and the grandson of a Seabee, and has spent 40 years in service.
In a separate item, TIME said Jacobs recently met with Brian Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb, a travel company Chesky co-founded 19 years ago. It said Chesky has led the company since its founding and frequently questions management styles and how chief executives shape their companies. TIME said the conversation appears in the latest episode of The CEO Moment.
TIME also highlighted several other pieces in its latest edition. It said one story examines the contenders to succeed António Guterres as the next United Nations Secretary-General. Another, it said, looks at research in which scientists watched bursts of sound alter the flow of fluid in the sleeping brain as they test "pink noise" as a sleep aid. TIME said a third piece profiles Louisa Moats, whose teacher-training program is painstaking, pricey and decades old but is now in demand. A fourth, it said, offers fall yard habits that help pollinators survive winter, noting that leaves, hollow stems, bare soil and fallen branches can become winter habitat.
