Time Magazine is reporting that the Ohio Senate race, featuring Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican incumbent Jon Husted, may be a pivotal contest for control of the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. The magazine said Brown is currently leading in polls in a state Democrats had previously considered a lost cause.

According to a Fox News poll that closed June 1, Brown is ahead of Husted by eight points. Time noted that this lead comes as President Donald J Trump holds a 57% unfavorable rating among Ohioans, a significant shift from his 52-46% positive rating when he won the White House in 2024.

Time reported that Republicans are developing a strategy to shift the focus away from Trump and onto Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat. Republicans plan to cast Brown as a vote for Schumer to regain the Majority Leader position, hoping to energize their base and temper Democratic enthusiasm. Schumer's unfavorable ratings have risen to 68% this year, up from 52% at the start of Trump's second term. Brown, a 73-year-old former senator with decades of experience in Ohio politics, is described as a progressive voice who balances Democratic loyalty with criticism of past free-trade policies.
