Newsweek is reporting that five men have been arrested in the United Kingdom over a suspected terror plot near Royal Air Force Fairford, a British airbase used by the U.S. military for strikes on Iran. It said British counter-terrorism police are investigating possible links to Iran after authorities evacuated around 85 households and sealed off roads around the Gloucestershire base.
Newsweek said the arrests came after Tehran previously warned that U.K. bases used by the U.S. against Iran could be considered legitimate targets. President Donald Trump praised the U.S.-U.K. collaboration, saying the five men had been on the radar of both countries for a "long time" and were "looking to do big damage" to the facility. "We got them," he added. The individuals have not yet been identified by police.
Newsweek said the arrests come as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high. Trump has rejected Iran's latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while a new report suggests Trump expects U.S. strikes against Iran to resume after the November midterms. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz pushed back on that report Sunday, calling it "anonymous reporting" while saying Trump would "leave all options on the table."
In politics, Newsweek is reporting that Michigan's largest newspaper has weighed in on one of the key Senate races of the midterms. The Detroit Free Press has endorsed Democrat Abdul El-Sayed over Republican Mike Rogers, with an editorial urging Michiganders to vote for El-Sayed. Newsweek said Michigan represents one of the key midterm races as the Democratic party hopes to flip control of the Senate, and that failing to secure the seat being vacated by Democratic Senator Gary Peters would make their path more challenging.
Newsweek also reported that a new poll in Texas finds Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico drawing support from 15 percent of voters who backed Trump in 2024, compared with 4.3 percent of Kamala Harris voters backing Republican Ken Paxton. In Los Angeles, it said City Councilmember Nithya Raman has surged ahead of Mayor Karen Bass in a new poll.
Separately, Newsweek reported that President Donald Trump criticized the U.S. Supreme Court on Sunday after the justices rejected efforts to revive a Republican-backed Missouri congressional map for the third time this month. It said the dispute centers on a congressional map approved by Missouri Republicans in 2025, and that the justices said switching maps at such a late stage would create "electoral chaos."
