The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science & Technology Directorate (S&T) has announced a new set of national challenges under its Genesis Mission, aimed at bolstering the United States’ security, resilience, and global leadership in critical technology domains. These initiatives specifically target advancements in software assurance for national security and innovation in biotechnology, including the early detection of biological threats.

One key challenge, "Software Understanding for National Security," addresses the inherent risks posed by widespread reliance on third-party and legacy software within critical infrastructure and mission systems. This effort seeks to develop advanced AI-driven tools capable of autonomously analyzing, verifying, and assuring the safety and security of software-controlled systems, thereby revolutionizing software supply chain assurance and mitigating national mission risks.

Concurrently, DHS S&T is collaborating across federal agencies on "Early Detection and Attribution of Biological Threats." This challenge focuses on deploying AI-enabled platforms to rapidly detect, characterize, and attribute emerging biological threats, which is crucial for safeguarding public health and the bioeconomy. These capabilities are designed to shorten detection and response timelines, deter adversaries, and protect Americans from the misuse of biotechnology.

DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology Pedro Allende underscored the significance of these endeavors. "America’s security and prosperity depend on our ability to understand and control the technologies that underpin our critical infrastructure and bioeconomy," Allende said. He added that by launching these challenges, DHS is taking decisive action to ensure the nation remains resilient against evolving threats and continues to lead in scientific innovation, providing lasting advantages for national security, public safety, and economic competitiveness.

The initiative will leverage the United States’ extensive biological data resources, national laboratory infrastructure, and cross-agency expertise to foster innovation and secure the nation's technological future.
