The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local Social Security offices, card centers and hearing offices in Michigan has changed.

In a notice to recipients, the agency directed Michigan residents to check the current status of their local office before visiting. The agency also noted that a visit may not be necessary, pointing to services that can be handled online.

The SSA highlighted a range of popular online services, including reviewing your latest Social Security statement, checking your earnings history, estimating retirement benefits and checking the status of an application or appeal.

Benefits can also be applied for online, the agency said, including retirement benefits, disability benefits and Medicare benefits, as well as appeals of medical decisions.

Account management tasks are available online as well, such as changing your address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing proof of benefits and printing your 1099.

The agency said users can find help and answers online, including reviewing frequently asked questions, requesting a replacement Medicare card and requesting a replacement Social Security card.

The SSA encouraged the public to go digital and create a personal my Social Security account, joining the millions who use it to discover their benefits.
