Arlington Public Schools (APS) is preparing to welcome students back on Monday, August 31, with a strong emphasis on student safety and community engagement. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to download the ParentVUE App to complete the Back-to-School Packet and review the complete 2026-2027 APS School Calendar.
In a move to enhance road safety, Arlington County has installed 10 additional School Zone Speed Safety Cameras, bringing the total in the PhotoSPEED program to 35. This expansion is part of the County's broader Vision Zero commitment to creating safer routes for students. The Arlington County Police Department also urges all road users, including cyclists on e-bikes and e-scooters, to be aware of traffic laws.
Beyond school preparations, Arlington is seeking public feedback on several initiatives, including the Drew Park Final Draft Concept until September 8, and upgrades to the Resident Permit Parking system in a virtual session on September 9. The County is also conducting a study to recommend limits for allowed impervious areas in certain neighborhoods and will host a screening of "Beyond Silence" on September 9 to address mental health stigma.
Residents can also enjoy Metropolitan Washington Summer Restaurant Week, participate in the 9/11 Memorial 5K Run for the 25th anniversary, and donate old laptops to Computer CORE's E-Cycle event on Saturday, August 29. The deadline for the 2026-2027 EcoAmbassadors cohort is August 31, offering free training for students.
