The U.S. Library of Congress Music Division has launched a new research guide, "Stephen Sondheim: A Guide to Resources in the Library of Congress," to help researchers explore its extensive collection of materials by, about, and connected to the renowned composer. This guide complements the Stephen Sondheim Papers, acquired in June 2025, which have already seen over 700 consultation requests.
The comprehensive guide organizes Sondheim-related materials by format, detailing their location within the Library's collections. It also provides access to digital content, including 6.5 hours of 1997 video interviews with Sondheim conducted by Senior Music Specialist Mark Horowitz, available for streaming.
Researchers can uncover unique resources such as unpublished copyright deposits, manuscript and annotated full scores, and charming correspondence. The Music Division encourages enthusiasts to utilize this new portal, which will be continuously updated as more collections are processed. Questions about accessing these materials can be directed to the Library's reference librarians.
