The NPR Tiny Desk Contest has revealed its top five finalists ahead of the announcement of the overall winner.
Denver-based Lauren Frihauf impressed the judges with her solo acoustic entry, "One Thing Always Leads to Another." Bobby praised her entry, noting, "What I love is the songwriting." Robin added, "I can’t believe she’s unsigned."
Dallas hip-hop group Cure for Paranoia also made the list with "No Brainer." Madison McFerrin said, "[This song] hooked me instantly." Electronic musician Noa Bar earned a spot with "Diagnosis," a track built using desk objects and her voice, prompting Tierra Whack to say, "Her voice, the beat selection, I wish my voice could sound like that."
Les Greene & The Swayzees delivered a powerful performance with "Long Story Short," prompting Bobby to say, "That got the hair standing up on my arms." The final contender is Lehi, Utah's the King will come, whose gospel track "welcome" features lead singer Tamy Stevens blending rap and vocalization. Bobby said, "That was really special."
The overall winner will soon be announced from this group of five finalists. The chosen act will earn the opportunity to perform a Tiny Desk concert at headquarters before hitting the road on tour.
