Virginia State Parks are gearing up for a summer of celebration and outdoor adventure, marking their 90th anniversary with a special History and Culture Weekend on June 13-14, 2026. The park system, which began with six locations on June 15, 1936, has expanded to 44 parks, ensuring most Virginians are within an hour's drive of a natural escape. The anniversary weekend will feature cultural demonstrations and guided kayaking tours.
This weekend, visitors can also participate in National Trails Day on Saturday, June 6, 2026, with various events planned across the parks. Additionally, a Free Fishing Day is scheduled for June 7, 2026, at Machicomoco State Park, alongside other nature-focused activities at Powhatan, Kiptopeke, Holliday Lake, Pocahontas, and Hayfields State Parks.
For those seeking longer stays, nearly 300 climate-controlled, pet-friendly cabins with full kitchens are available year-round, though summer reservations fill quickly. The parks also highlight six less-traveled trails for peaceful exploration and wildlife viewing. Virginia State Parks are also hiring for various full-time, part-time, and seasonal roles in maintenance, interpretation, law enforcement, and beach ranger positions.
