Fairfax City is set for a vibrant week of community events and ongoing civic initiatives, including two major concerts and critical infrastructure work, while also planning for future development and funding. Residents can look forward to musical performances and family-friendly activities, alongside city efforts to enhance public safety and accessibility.

The "Rock the Block" concert series continues on July 24 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Old Town Square, featuring acoustic duo Chris and Kendall, and The U.S. Army Downrange Band. The event will include a beer garden and food trucks. Additionally, the City of Fairfax Band will host a Children’s Concert on July 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sherwood Center, offering free ice cream, face-painting, and a chance to explore a fire truck.

Starting July 27 and continuing through September, Fairfax City crews will undertake vegetation trimming and removal along public walkways to ensure a four-foot-wide, eight-foot-high clearance for pedestrian safety and visibility. Property owners are encouraged to maintain their trees and shrubs to prevent obstruction. Homeowners considering solar power have an extended deadline of August 15 to sign up for the Solarize NOVA program, with contracts due by September 15.

The City Council, which met on July 14, adopted a resolution requesting a special election on November 3, 2026. This election will ask voters to authorize a general retail sales tax not exceeding 1%, with revenues dedicated solely to capital projects for schools and/or public transportation. The Council also discussed amendments to the Zoning Ordinance, the Urban Forest Master Plan, and Housing Trust Fund guidelines.

Looking ahead, the City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts is accepting grant applications until August 31 to support local artists and cultural organizations. Furthermore, the City of Fairfax Treasurer’s Office renewed its accreditation from the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia on July 1, 2026, demonstrating its commitment to statewide best practices in treasury management.
