USA TODAY is reporting that President Donald J Trump has endorsed Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey, who is running unopposed in his primary. The newspaper said Kean has been absent from Capitol Hill since early March, missing more than 100 votes due to an unspecified medical issue with a positive prognosis. Speaker Mike Johnson also stated Kean has not informed him of the details. A local Republican leader, Tracy DiFrancesco Zaikov, told USA TODAY she recently spoke with Kean and is confident in his ability to campaign, noting his office continues to assist constituents.
The newspaper also reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio told a Senate panel that Iran must agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for peace talks to advance. Rubio stated Iran would then need to commit to negotiating the transfer of its enriched uranium and severe limitations or cancellation of enrichment activity. He noted these are highly technical matters that would require more than five days to resolve but require an initial commitment from Iran.
Additionally, USA TODAY is reporting that President Trump appointed Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as the new acting director of national intelligence. Pulte replaces Tulsi Gabbard and was described by Trump on Truth Social as having "deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets," despite lacking prior intelligence experience.
The White House Correspondents' Association has rescheduled its annual dinner after a shooting incident in April, USA TODAY said. Separately, President Trump reacted to a judge's order to remove his name from the Kennedy Center, stating he has "no interest" in the venue.
